This year SPARC will be rolling out a new podcast “Penn Soul”. We’ll bring you thoughts and insights from some of the wonderful and wise people who inhabit this amazing campus…
First up – our friends Rabbi Josh Bolton (Penn Hillel) and Chaplain Patty Anton (Penn MSA) share their thoughts on the extremely rare calendar synchronization between Muslim & Jewish holidays this Fall. This weekend as Jews are observing Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and the holiest day of the year in the Jewish calendar, Muslims will be commemorating Ashura, the tenth day of the month of Muharram. For Shia Muslims Ashura is a time of mourning in remembrance of the martydom of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala, while for Sunnis the holiday remembers Moses and the rescue of the people of Israel from Egypt.
Click below to listen as Patty & Josh explore the themes of the season, the role of fasting in both traditions, the history of these holidays, and the role of the chaplain on Penn’s campus.”
